How to write a CV for UK jobs (applying from Pakistan or the Gulf)

Updated 20 October 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer

A UK CV is two pages at most, has no photo, date of birth, marital status or nationality details, and starts with a short personal profile. List experience newest first with results, use British spelling, and state your right to work or visa status clearly, for example "Eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship" or "Graduate visa, full right to work until 2027".

How a UK CV differs from a Pakistani or Gulf CV

UK employers follow equality laws that discourage decisions based on age, gender, religion or marital status. So UK CVs leave out personal details that are normal on CVs in Pakistan and the Gulf.

  • No photo. A photo can even get your CV set aside to avoid bias claims.
  • No date of birth, age, marital status, religion or CNIC/passport number.
  • Nationality only as right to work: say whether you need sponsorship, not where you were born.
  • Two pages maximum for most roles. Academic and medical CVs can be longer.
  • British spelling: organised, programme, licence (noun), CV rather than resume.

UK CV layout

  1. Name and contact details: name, phone with country code, email, LinkedIn and city and country. A UK address is not required.
  2. Personal profile: three or four lines on who you are, your experience, your strongest results and the role you want.
  3. Right to work: one line, either in the header or under the profile.
  4. Work experience: newest first, with job title, employer, city and country, month and year. Three to six bullets per role, each with a result.
  5. Education: degree, university, year and classification or CGPA. Add the UK equivalent if you know it (for example from Ecctis).
  6. Skills and certifications: technical skills, tools, professional memberships and licences.

References are not listed. UK employers ask for them after an offer.

Writing your right to work

This is the first question a UK recruiter has about an overseas applicant. Make it impossible to miss and never leave it vague.

  • "Requires Skilled Worker visa sponsorship"
  • "Graduate visa, full right to work until September 2027"
  • "Health and Care Worker visa eligible; NMC registration in progress (CBT passed)"
  • "Dependant visa, full right to work, no sponsorship needed"

If you need sponsorship, target employers that are licensed sponsors. The UK government publishes the register of licensed sponsors, and roles must usually meet a minimum salary and skill level.

Explaining overseas experience so UK readers understand it

UK recruiters may not know your employer or your qualification. Add a few words of context so they can judge your level.

  • After the company name, add a short description: "[Bank name] (one of Pakistan's five largest banks, 800+ branches)". Your own employer's real size works best..
  • Convert currency when it helps: "PKR 400 million (about £1.1 million) in new deposits".
  • Explain local terms: write "medical officer (equivalent to SHO)" or "Intermediate (equivalent to A Levels)".
  • Name international standards and tools that UK employers recognise, such as IFRS, NEBOSH, AWS or PRINCE2.

Healthcare and regulated professions

Many applicants from Pakistan and the Gulf move to the UK as nurses and doctors. These roles need registration with the regulator before you can practise.

  • Nurses: show your NMC application stage (CBT, OSCE) and IELTS or OET scores. See the nurse CV example.
  • Doctors: show GMC registration status and PLAB or a recognised postgraduate qualification. See the doctor CV example.
  • Engineers and accountants: mention progress towards UK chartership or professional body membership.

Put registration status in your profile or header, since recruiters filter on it.

Personal profile examples

The profile replaces the long "career objective" common on older Pakistani and Gulf CVs. Write it in a confident, factual tone and skip clichés like "hard-working team player".

Software engineer

"Backend engineer with 6 years building payment and e-commerce systems in Pakistan and the UAE, most recently handling 50,000 transactions a day. Strong in Node.js, PostgreSQL and AWS. Requires Skilled Worker visa sponsorship."

Staff nurse

"Registered nurse with 5 years in adult ICU at a 600-bed hospital in Riyadh. BLS and ACLS certified; NMC CBT passed and OSCE booked. Looking for a Band 5 critical care role."

Accountant

"ACCA-qualified accountant with 7 years in month-end close, IFRS reporting and audit for manufacturing groups. Cut the close from 10 to 6 days. Graduate visa holder with full right to work until 2027."

Mistakes overseas applicants make

  • Sending the same CV used for Gulf jobs, with photo, passport number and date of birth still on it.
  • Hiding visa status, which leads recruiters to assume the worst and move on.
  • Three or four pages of duties instead of two pages of results.
  • Local abbreviations with no explanation, such as grade names, internal job codes or exam boards.
  • Applying to roles where the employer cannot sponsor, or where the salary is below the visa threshold.

Make it ATS-friendly

Most UK employers and NHS trusts use applicant tracking systems or online forms. Keep your CV simple: standard headings, no tables for key information, real text rather than images, and a PDF or Word file as the advert requests. Mirror the advert's keywords honestly.

Cover letters and supporting statements

UK applications often ask for a cover letter, and NHS and public sector roles ask for a supporting statement that answers the person specification point by point. Use one short paragraph per criterion with a real example.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a photo on a CV for UK jobs?

No. UK CVs do not include photos, and adding one can work against you.

Do I need to mention my visa status on a UK CV?

Yes. State clearly whether you need sponsorship or already have the right to work, and until when.

How long should a UK CV be?

Two pages for most roles. Graduates can use one page; academic and medical CVs can be longer.

Is a CV the same as a resume in the UK?

In the UK the document is called a CV and is usually up to two pages. Read our [CV vs resume guide](/guides/cv-vs-resume/) for the differences by country.
